Finding Area

What is area? How do you find area of an object?

Simply put, area is the inside of an object.  It is the amount of two-dimensional space taken up by an object.

Can you think of a job that uses area to perform the work?

Example:

Count all of the smaller squares inside each larger square. How many did you count?

What if the object is not on grid paper? How do you find the area?

You need to use two measurements and a formula to find area.

Formula:

The rectangle's length is 10.  The rectangle's width is 5.  Using the above formula you must multiply the measurements.

10 X 5=50

If a unit is given, you need to include it with the number.  If the above example was in feet, you would include it in your answer.

Example:
                              50 square feet

Where did the square come from?

When finding the area of a shape, it always requires the multiplication of  two lengths.
Due to the multiplication of two lengths, the answer will always be in square units.
